What is a Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)?
Abdominoplasty is designed to firm and smooth the abdomen. This cosmetic procedure removes excess skin and fat from the abdomen and may also tighten the muscles of the abdominal wall. The result is a flatter, tighter abdominal profile.
When women have had children, the lining of the abdominal muscles can stretch or rip and the abdomen can develop a bulge. Men may also have tummy tucks if they suffer from excess abdominal skin and fat.
There are several types of abdominoplasty; from a minor removal of hanging skin (a mini-tuck); to a major abdominoplasty to tighten the entire abdomen. It is designed to remove only as much excess skin and fatty tissue as is practical and safe. Stretch marks below the bellybutton are removed along with the excess skin.
What to Expect After Tummy Tuck Surgery
You are restricted to bed for 2 to 3 days with periods of walking just enough to eat and go to the bathroom. Coughing, laughing, sneezing or anything that exerts the abdominal muscles will produce discomfort. Often it takes several days for the patient to be able to stand and walk fully erect.
