Upper Arm Lift (Brachioplasty)

Brachioplasty (Arm Lift) Procedure

Arm tissue relaxes with age, gravity and weight loss. Drooping skin is caused by the stretching of the anchoring system of the arm and loss of supporting fat. Patients are very unhappy with flabby "loose hammock" appearance. Brachioplasty removes excess tissue and reduces the circumference of the upper arm. Surgical correction depends on the amount of extra skin and how loose the supporting tissues have become.

Extra skin is removed from incisions along the inner arm. The incision must be placed where the tissue can be best tightened but the incision must be hidden as well. An alternative to this is "Ultrasound Assisted Lipectomy," which involves much smaller incisions and no skin removal. This procedure can only be used effectively when there is minimal excess skin. The exact cost of either of these procedures varies depending on the extent of procedure.

The surgery package price includes the surgeon's fee, the anesthesiologist's fee, the hospital and operating room expenses (a range from $5,000 to $7,500). The actual procedure lasts approximately 3 hours.

What to Expect After Surgery

The dressing around the arms may be extensive and involves wearing a compression garment for a month following the procedure. You will need to protect the incisions after surgery. Limiting lifting is important. Elevation with pillows decreases swelling and discomfort.
